Community Health Access to Addiction and Mental Healthcare Project (CHAMP)

New York State’s Community Health Access to Addiction and Mental Healthcare Project (CHAMP), a joint statewide program of the New York State Office of Mental Health, Office of Addiction Services and Supports, and other partners, is designed to help individuals and their families access needed substance use disorder and mental health treatment services and get the most from their health insurance benefits.

Program Information

AHI is one of nine community-based organizations working in collaboration with the Community Service Society of New York, the Legal Action Center, the New York State Council for Community Behavioral Healthcare, and the Medicare Rights Center.

Together, these organizations provide critical assistance to consumers, including:

  • Obtaining and maintaining health insurance
  • Understanding what mental health and substance use disorder benefits are covered by your insurance and how to access them
  • Finding mental health and substance use disorder providers
  • Assisting you with obtaining needed approvals (such as prior authorization, additional services, and out-of-network services)
  • Appealing denials of mental health and substance use disorder services and medications
  • Providing referrals
  • Conducting education and outreach sessions for consumers, health advocates, and treatment providers
  • Identifying and addressing parity and other legal violations

CHAMP services are available to everyone, regardless of insurance coverage, including the uninsured. Our services are available year-round.

CHAMP is designed to help all New Yorkers navigate and overcome insurance-related barriers to accessing mental health and substance use disorder services.

Representatives may be able to help you resolve your concern immediately, or enlist the expertise of a dedicated CHAMP legal, substance use disorder, or mental health specialist to address the issue. You can be assured timely, respectful, and culturally-sensitive assistance with your concerns, including:

○ Access to treatment;
○ Denial of services;
○ Access to medication;
○ Parity/coverage discrimination issues;
○ System navigation;
○ Medical benefits;
○ Enrollment referral;
○ Legal assistance for insurance appeals.
